Leek travelled to Cannock to play in the 2nd mini Staffordshire festival. Leek entered 2 teams with Burton and Lichfield combining their numbers to make up a team and hosts Cannock also putting out strong numbers.
Leek Eagles started their match against Burton/Lichfield and scored at will. One the other pitch, Leek Hawks started to struggle a little in defence against Cannock so we quickly decided to go mixed ability across both Leek teams.
The Eagles ran out 75 points to 10 winners with trys from Captain Holly Fryer 7 Izzy Parry 2 Ella Weeks 2 Melody Dunn 2 and Honor Beaumont Pearson and Shannon Walchester completing the scoring.
The Hawks fought back from some early scores from a much improved and powerful Cannock side to win 30 points to 25. Abby Taffe and Molly Mealey both scored for Leek with Morgan Richardson and Izzy both scoring a brace.
The Hawks then played Burton/Lichfield and ran riot running in an incredible 14 trys and only conceding once. Scorers were Morgan 4 Izzy 3 Shannon 3 Abby2 and Molly 2.
The Eagles took on Cannock in the final game winning 35 points to 15 with Katie Mellor, Dunny and Holly 5 scoring for Leek.
The try total in obviously high from ourselves but don't be fooled in thinking that the opposition is not the best. Cannock are a bigger team than our girls and are very strong and have improved from our last encounter. Burton and Lichfield have also improved and have some very powerful runners. The truth is that our girls are playing at their optimum all the time and rarely miss a tackle. Ella Weeks has a superb rucking technic and, with the support from Dunny, we are winning plenty of turnover ball. Lottie Proctor leads the way in the line tackle and sets the tone. We had a debutant in Abby Weston who has never played rugby before and she was immense with classy powerful runs and could have scored on her debut but unselfishly passed to Dunny to secure the try. All the girls attend training every Monday evening. There is an old saying I use, the harder you work, the luckier you get. Well done girls. All of you were brilliant individually and collectively.
