Saving the best til last

Saving the best til last

2s close season with 11-try rout of Newcastle

Leek 2s saved their best performance of the season until the last game, running in 11 tries at already-relegated Newcastle 2s to finish the campaign on a high.

Injuries and 1st XV call-ups meant inconsistent team selection all season, making it tough going for Andy Thompson's men as they came up against mostly 1st XV opposition following their promotion last year.

But they have risen to the challenge, registering nine wins through the campaign with a blend of youth and experience as some of Leek's young guns have come into the squad for their first taste of senior rugby.

It was one of the old hands who got Leek on the board today, Jake Farr-Green crossing after just two minutes. Powerhouse number 8 Naz Narawa made it 0-14 soon after and the blue and whites looked set for a comfortable afternoon. But Newcastle came back strongly, scoring twice to level the scores after 20 minutes.

Ever-present Harry Byrne reclaimed the lead with another try in what has been a standout season for the young winger, and then the floodgates opened. Three more tries followed, including one for big brother Joe, as Leek went into the break up 14-38.

Farr-Green got things rolling again in the second period with his second score and four more followed in a lopsided contest, the hosts managing only one in response as the game finished 19-73.

With the youngest of the Byrne brothers, Louis, coming on for his senior debut in the second half, Leek have yet another promising talent to add into the mix for next season.
