Will Midwinter's penalty with the final kick of the game sealed a comeback win for Leek in the Papa Johns Community Shield.
In a seesaw game, the Moorlanders had to come from behind with a strong second half performance to take the spoils.
The blue and whites edged the early exchanges, Midwinter's first penalty and Josh Cartlidge's try putting them 5-8 ahead after 15 minutes. But the hosts came on strong in the second quarter, with three unanswered tries putting them 26-8 up at the break.
But as we have seen all season, this Leek side do not lie down. Rob McDermott claimed the opening try of the second half, only for Derby to respond immediately. Then converted tries from Jack Newton-Taylor and Tom Hayes reduced the gap to two points.
Derby scored again, only for Newton-Taylor to claim his second. Hayes followed suit shortly afterwards and Leek had taken the lead. With time ticking down, Derby edged in front again with their seventh try, but three missed conversions were to prove costly. Leek won a penalty 40 metres out and coolhand Will duly slotted it over to claim a famous win.
Leek's second string had something of a makeshift look about them as they travelled to Tamworth in the Staffordshire Centenary Cup, with four colts and several 3rd team regulars donning the shirt and no replacements available.
They put up a strong fight and, despite conceding three tries in the first half, trailed by just two points at the break thanks to two Jack Winfield penalties and a converted try by young debutant Jake.
Tamworth stretched their lead with a seven-pointer early in the second half but with ten minutes left Jack Bray gave the Moorlanders hope with a try, converted by Wiffa. The hosts scored two more as the Leek defence began to tire, but Gregor Hayes' converted try pulled it back to just one score. A late Tamworth penalty made it 35-27 at the final whistle.
Both teams have a week off for Easter before returning to cup competition with ties at Altrad Park on 26 April.
