Leek lost out to league rivals Burton in the Staffordshire county cup final, going down 33-10.

The Moorlanders conceded three first half tries and two more in the second period. Alex Fitzmaurice-James grabbed a consolation score for the blue and white, Will Midwinter converting having previously slotted a penalty.

In a tight early contest the scoreboard remained 0-0 until the 16th minute, when the cupholders went ahead in their first sustained period of pressure. They added a second on 25 minutes.

Midwinter's penalty from in front of the posts reduced the deficit, but the black and whites scored again late on to take a 19-3 lead at the break.

Despite a yellow card, Burton extended their advantage early in the second half. Fitz's score came on 54 minutes but Burton responded again to make it 33-10. The blue and whites were simply unable to convert pressure and possession into points.

They have a chance to regroup with a training game at Sandbach next Saturday before kicking off the league season against Rossendale on 26 September.
