Five star Leek reach county final

Five star Leek reach county final

Graham Leftwich7 Feb - 17:09

Three sets of brothers in blue and white

A five star, five try performance away at Walsall saw Leek progress to the Staffordshire Cup Final, where they will meet either Lichfield or Burton, whose game today was postponed.

The Moorlanders weren't expecting an easy ride against traditionally tough opponents. The Delves Road outfit are riding high in Regional 2 Midlands North and were coming off a big home win last time out.

But any cup nerves were settled early, as Jack Newton-Taylor scored the opener with just two minutes gone. Our latest centurion Oli Powell added a second halfway through the opening period, and when Connor Bassett grabbed a third, Leek were sitting pretty, 0-21 up at the break.

The hosts hit back with a try straight from the kick off. But Leek dug in and shut out their opponents for the rest of the game. It was a fragmented second period, not helped by the weather, with three yellow cards for Walsall and one for Joel Booth.

The blue and whites reasserted control, and late tries from Jack Newton-Taylor and Joe Byrne put the icing on the cake, Leek running out 7-33 winners. As a family club, it was great to see three sets of brothers on the pitch for the Moorlanders - Joe and Jack Newton-Taylor, Oli and Oscar Powell and Joe and Harry Byrne.

It was a great day as well at St Edward's Park, as the title-chasing 3rd XV claimed a big 42-17 win over Broughton Park that keeps them well in the mix.

Earlier in the day the Academy XV lost a close one, 22-15 at Stafford.
