Brave Leek go toe to toe with league heavyweights

Brave Leek go toe to toe with league heavyweights

Graham Leftwich8 Mar - 13:32

Three tries scored in losing battle

Brave Leek went toe to toe with one of the league's heavyweights, holding them for the first half hour of the game before succumbing.

Huddersfield, who have lost only once all season, were simply too big and too strong, running out 17-42 winners. It was another physical, attritional match against the West Yorkshire outfit, who are clearly not worried about making friends in the wider rugby community.

The damn broke with two tries before half time and another brace in the opening minutes of the second period to claim a bonus point. Joe Byrne got Leek on the board halfway through the second period. Connor Bassett and Josh Nadin also got on the scoresheet in the latter stages, with the visitors claiming two more tries in return.

Huddersfield remain two points behind unbeated Regional 1 North West leaders Anselmians. Saints' visit to Lockwood Park at the end of the season looks likely to be the title decider.

Stockport's win at Bowdon sees them move back above Leek in the table, but they have Anselmians up next while the Moorlanders prepare for Blackburn.

It was a tough day all round for the blue and whites, with the 2nd XV going down 38-11 at Luctonians and the 3s losing their top of the table clash at Marple 29-17.
