Leek's senior squad had a disappointing end to their preseason programme with a home loss to Matlock.
The hosts went behind early and weren't able to recover the ground, conceding straight from the kick-off and again after 15 minutes. Wing Josh Cartlidge pulled one back after half an hour to make the score 7-12, but the visitors bagged another score just before half-time to make it 7-19.
The Derbyshire team stretched their lead midway through the second half. Carlo's second try gave the Moorlanders hope, but it was Matlock who had the last word, running out comfortable winners 12-33.
The Moorlanders will look to dust themselves down and prepare for the league season opener at Manchester next Saturday.
Earlier yesterday, Leek Colts made a strong showing with third place in a preseason tournament at Burton's Battlestead Croft ground.
The Leek youngsters started with a comfortable 17-0 win over Longton, before edging the hosts 5-0. Defeat to Bromsgrove in the third tie meant the blue and whites went into the third place playoff, where they saw off Stoke 19-0. A really promising start for what looks like a strong Colts squad this year.
