Ashbourne 7 v 0 Leek Saints
From the start both teams seemed evenly matched but the Saints front five with the return of Joe Capper from injury Mick Smith, Des Birnie, Matt Leather and Andy Gordon soon had the upper hand of the opposition in the scrums and with the combination of John Wooloff at scrum half the backs had plenty of clean ball. Ashbourne defended well and with some of the referees decisions it at times seemed like The Saints were up against 16 players but discipline held strong. Attack after attack came from both sides and with some superb defending from The Saints and Ashbourne saw the halftime whistle even Nil Nil. The Second half saw pretty much of the same strong attacks coming from the backs and good ground being made from the centre combination of Nick Parmer and Steve Mottram. But the strong Ashborne defence kept the Saints from a score. Just as the game looked like it would end up with out any points from both sides Ashbourne kicked a long ball into space and with a good follow up managed to score a try which they failed to convert. With only 4 minuets left to play every Saints player dug deep and gave 110% taking on the opposition to try to even the score but the final whistle beat them.
Next week Leek Saints take on Cannock 2nds away.
