Hard Fought Away Win

Saturday 28th February 2015

Warley 2nd XV (10) v (12) Leek 3rd XV

On Saturday Leek 3rd's made the the long journey South to the West Midlands to play WARLEY 2's in what was always going to be a close encounter after the reverse fixture at leek earlier in the season.
WARLEY chose to kick down hill with a favourable wind in the 1st half but this did not play to their advantage and it was Leek who scored the 1st try when Fly Half Dicksey went over underneath the posts giving Hicks an easy conversion for a 7 point lead. However Warley who were early season pace setters in the league were not about to rollover and within 15 mins had reduced the deficit to 5-7. The score remained as this until half time.
The 2nd half started as the 1st had finished with both teams fiercely contesting the game more or less in the middle of the pitch.
However 10 mins into the 2nd half, the game began to slip slowly away from leek as some poor refereeing decisions began to effect Leek's game plan and on 60mins a clever jinxing run by Warley's srum half enabled him to touch down in the corner to give Warley a 10 - 7 lead. Leek pushed hard for from there on in and were camped in Warley's 22 for the next 20 mins In which Warley had numerous chances to clear their lines, but continued pressure from Leek in closing their options down, eventually paid dividends when a quick tap penalty from Hicks was pushed out to Fly Half Dicksey who passed out to inside centre Copperwheat to go over the line with only 10 seconds remaining.
Although the conversion was missed Leeks discipline under pressure had secured them their hardest fought victory of the season to keep them top of the Staffs div'2 merit table with 3 league games remaining.
Captain Hicks said later " to travel so far and show such commitment right to the very end of a very tough game gives me great pleasure, everyone to a man gave their all today to register a very hard earned victory, and credit must also be given to Warley who played their part in a very enjoyable but competitive game".
