Regional 2 North Midlands
Leek 24
Matlock 8
A gritty performance against a well drilled and powerful Matlock side, from the whole Leek squad saw the Moorlanders through with 14 men from the 32nd minute following a red card to captain Ed Cheadle for a high tackle.
2 tries from Jacob Bainbridge in the 2nd half and a debut try from Joe Gorman saw Leek home after going behind in the first half to a well drilled Matlock side.
3 conversions and a penalty from the reliable boot of Will Midwinter sealed the win.
The result moved Leek up to 2nd place again as league leaders Long Eaton lost at home for the first time to Melbourne. Long Eaton has 36 points, Leek has 34 points as does Melbourne.
Sutton Coldfield lost at Newark so dropped to 4th on 34 points.
This weekend sees Leek travel to play Nuneaton Old Edwardians, a side they have played in the past when in the old North West leagues. They too were promoted as champions last year, so this will be another stern test for the Moorlanders.
