Leek welcomed Mansfield in the quarter final of the Midlands cup. Both teams have had strong seasons so far and the winner was hard to predict.
Mansfield started well and Leek could not get the ball off them. Great defensive line pressure by Holly Fryer saw her opposite number fumble the ball and Holly kicked through from 35 yards to score a cracker in the corner. Millie Conord them slotted a superb conversion.
From the kick off Leek did not field the ball well and Mansfield turned the ball over and after some phases scored with an overlap. Five minutes later Holly again showed defensive line speed and intercepted the ball to run in under the posts from half way which she then converted. Mansfield then hit back again to score a converted try. The game then levelled out and Leek had their best phases of possession but poor handling meant Mansfield could clear their lines. From a five metre scrum on Mansfield line Melody Dunn pressured her opposite player for Morgan Richardson to pounce on the loose ball to score. Two more Mansfield trys resulted in the HT score of 24-21 to Mansfield.
The 2nd half was dominated by Mansfield and their retainment of the ball was brilliant. 3 more trys from Mansfield gave them a deserved win.
We wish Mansfield all the best in the next round and congratulate them on a superb performance
