Superb team performance just good enough against previously unbeaten opponents

Leek travelled to Bury to play Bury/Burnley cluster in the semi finals of the Area 5 national cup competition. With all the rain we have had, the pitch was obviously heavy making swift back play almost impossible. We had many injuries and unavailable players and just managed to put a team out. Playing with the wind, we soon got territorial advantage with set plays being camped inside the 10 metre area of B/B. From one of these scrums, Danielle picked up from No8 and made strong yards. The ever supporting Dunny received the ball 5 metres out and fed Molly. She had plenty to do but her will to score resulted in a fine try in the corner. Holly superbly kicked the conversion from the corner to give us a 7 nil lead. The rest of the half was dominated by both teams defences with Jenny, Izzy, Holly, Abby, Grace and Molly never missing their tackles. Dunny was having a ball matching her very talented opposite number who plays for the North. The second half was similar to the first with B/B getting better territory with the wind. The front 5 of Maddie, Ava, Kiera, Sammy and Lottie were all having stormers in both the set and loose. Danielle was battering her way down the field with Shannon and India giving it their all. Morgan was a monster in the loose and tackle cutting off quality ball to the B/B backs. Pressure eventually told and B/B crossed for a deserved try. With the conversion being missed Leek still had the lead until the B/B winger weaved her way through for what seemed the winning score. The difference is that we now will not accept defeat and quickly won the ball back. With 3 minutes left Jenny made yet another break and passed to Maddie in support. She off loaded to the ever present Morgan who out sprinted the B/B defence to score under the posts with Holly converting. I was a little sad after the game as no team deserved to loose. If it was a friendly we would have called it a draw. For both squads to put in the effort they did the main winner was rugby. Well done to the B/B girls. We now play Worcester in the final with great belief in our team ethic. Well done to all of our girls for their best performance of the season.
