The first contact game for Leek Leopards and they travelled in numbers taking three teams and substitutes to Stoke RUFC on a sunny Sunday morning. Stoke had a single team and so we bibbed up two teams to play against each other whilst the other team took it in turns to play against Stoke.
The hard work early in the season immediately showed with some great forward running and resolute defence turning the ball over driving players into touch giving Leek the edge in the first game. The white team picked up where the reds had left off and dominated the game with some great offloading leading to tries and strong defence which was a common feature of the afternoon. We called an early halt to the second game to ensure that the third game took place. This game involving the blue team was less pacey but even more physical than previous games with both Leek and Stoke with some very strong tackles especially so from a hard working Stoke team. Again Leek stuck to their guns and after some great breaks from the tackle area took a well deserved result.
Overall the teams surpassed our expectations and after several very close results last season against Stoke this time they were well deserved victors. No doubt Stoke will be gunning for us in the return fixture later in the season! Still lots to work on but a very promising start.
